With unprecedented project over flow at work mixed with my 3D Animation Class I find my "free" time to use CoH as a stress relief.

With that said I present my first project, a still life.

Brick & Bottle:

I would like to recommit goal my finishing of Not the Villain. I am sitting on three chapters, but cannot find the heart to finalize them for release. Just too much going on. Norman deserves my undivded attention and I want to release my best work. It's the least you all deserve.

Any comments welcome.

Nice work. I like the differences in the textures and shaders. The opalescent colors of the bottle, with the flat porcelain look of the bowl (pan?) at the bottom, and the rough grit of the brick all look as though you could reach for the screen and feel the difference with your fingertips.

What tools did you use to produce this?

Thanks.

It was done with Lightwave. Definitely not the most intuitive of 3D software packages.

I may still play with the compostion. The porcelain bowl is actually a cup. I just decided to zoom in for a closer look at the run-of-the-mill still life's.

I added green, red, and purple lights to help darken the mood. I only played with th lighting a little bit though. It will probably change tomorrow before class I am sure.

I haven't used Lightwave. I have Carrara, but am still a complete n00b.

I am not too bad with Daz, though, learning more about lighting as I go.

Here's a small example of one of my pieces:

That one has less post-work than some of the others, aside from the fact that the shoes didn't seem to pick up any of the shadows, so I had to manually shade them. I tried to give it the dark with spotlight feel of a dingy club to make it seem more authentic. The pose was done manually and was a bit of a pain because the one outfit is not really for this character, so every time something moved, it had to be manually adjusted accordingly.

I did apply a bit of grain using Photoshop to give it a softer feel.

The objects within Daz are all pre-modeled. I have used Carrara to make objects (really basic ones) for use in my Daz works. But I am not really experienced enough to do much. I started to learn Carrara and then started school and my 'play' time when right down the tubes. Sad

Now that you mention that being a cup, I can see that. Hehe. I am not the most observant creature at times.
Embarassed

Hmmm kinda cool. Now can you use it to make a guy with eye beams blowing up tank? ... a Russian built one of course. Twisted Evil

Seriously though. Pretty cool stuff to both of you. Wish I knew how to do that. Till then i'll just keep drawing with my #2 Pencil.

Actually, yes. I have male figures Now duplicating the proper costumes and finding (or building) a Russian tank might be a problem. Douglas Shuler uses Poser, I believe, which is the very expensive competitor to DAZ. Of course, he does some simply amazing post-work. He does a lot of his COH hero stuff with Poser models. He is simply an amazing artist.

I actually did a whole series of the 'dancer' pics. It was more of a challenge to see if I could faithfully recreate realistic looking poses. Plus I wanted to play with the lighting to give that 'club' feel. The worst part of it was the hair. It doesn't 'move' so if she assumes a horizontal position, the hair remains in the same place it was when she was standing upright. It isn't apparent in this work, but in one of her dancing with a chair, it is glaringly obvious. I did some post work to add a 'cascade' of hair that hangs down to the floor, where her hair SHOULD be, but didn't get around to cleaning up the hair that was there.

It's something I enjoy doing, but unfortunately it takes a LOT of time.

I haven't gotten around to modeling figures yet. My next project I am creating the signature weapon for my protaganist from Destroy the Titanic

It's the 13mm Collinger Warmonger revolver, aka Lucky 13.

I haven't decided what to do for a character model yet. I am torn between many choices. More real life would be perferable, but I have more stylish one in mind too.

That sucks about the clothes and that model. One of the whole benefits of 3D modeling is not having to conceive of every angle when changing positions.

I have access to Maya and Poser, but I am clueless on how to use them. I accidently made a tree in Maya just trying to figure out how to exit the thing.

BTW, MW, I found a tank, I just need to find a character too. There is a website, that has tons of free stuff on it of varying qualities. Geez... tha name escapes me. I wrote it down on my class notes, but don't have them at the moment.

Don't you hate it when that hapens. Then you are left with the question, Do I plant it for shade in the back yard or chop it for fire wood... decisions.

Follow-Ups:

A Hero of a Thousand Cups

A Typical Still Life Shot

My latest project. THe weapon my protaganist uses from my sci-fi series. A bit rough in some areas, but time was of the essence. THe instructor was more worried about textures and lighting then our "clean-up" of the geometry.

I am not going to say what popped in my mind when I saw that third-from-the-top thumbnail... lol.

Very nice studies. I like the mix of textures in the still life. One thing.... I am not sure where the colors are coming from, but I noticed the orange is reflected on the cup and bottle, but not the purple? I am not at all familiar with Maya.

Are you a gun collector?

Thank you.

With your writing I can imagine what you saw. Rolling Eyes Laughing

These were done in Lightwave. I wish we were going to learn Maya too. Looks like its good for making plants. And easy. If only I could find the exit buttton.

IIRC one or two of the lights are excluding the cup. I wanted the cup to be the protaganist so some of the more sinister colors its immune too. Nice catch. The purple is coming from above and front. THe redish orange is from behind and below the brick. The key light I think is a spot light and is only refleting off the cup to emphasis its purity.

I am not a gun collector. I don't even own any guns. But I am an avid 2nd Amendment supporter. Actually, I am what I call a Constitutionalist. There is an arguement whether its a "Living" document. I think there are no sides in the discussion. They are both correct. THe US Constitution limits government, plain and simple. The 2nd Amendment is there to guarantee the 1st. Government officials should be afraid of it, it's purest form removes them for office.

I'll stop know before I go on my rant. Smile

I completely agree with your Second Amendment beliefs. While I do not now own a gun, at one time (prior to a nasty divorce) I own several, a Remington 12 ga. shotgun, which I fired once and decided I did not like, a nice little Marlin .22 rifle that I got fairly good with, and a Beretta .22 pistol that I shot by...'instinct'. My first shooting experience with the new pistol was at a range. I put the target (a picture of my first ex, the spawn-of-the-devil father of my child) about 15 yards away and put a shot right through the head, left-center of chest and directly between the legs. The gun just felt right in my hand, as if we were one entity. I absolutely hated to lose it but was in very dire financial straits. Someday, I would like to buy another one.

When I was younger, I was a radical pacifist. Then I grew up and saw the world for what it really is. I realized then that there are times that peace is not the answer. There are things in this life worth defending, and often that defense must take the form of brute force. The children are one of those things. Our freedom is another. Okay.. enough ranting for today (but then you know that is what females do.... hehe).

I really like the theory behind your picture. Keep up the good work. You have a very artistic mind.
