Nice Pic. Like a cross between Wolverine and the Punisher. I liked the shading and detail on the upper body. Good work.

Definetly an improvement in your drawing powers bro. I liked it, the fine lines and shades of grey used were just right.
Thank you for sharing it.

This is a great pic. The muscles are well defined, the cloth (pants) folds are clear. However, there is no real direction of light. This looks more like an anatomical rendering, which is fine. Good core shadows will cover some fo teh anatomy, but a little reflected light can bring some definition back and even improve on teh form since it will look more three dimentional.
What's a core shadow? What's reflected light? So glad you asked.
If you take a simple ball and put it under a direct light source (the sun on a clear day will do) you will notice that the shadow is not even on teh dark side of the ball. The light will slowly fade into shadow, then it will get to the darkest point of the shadow. That is the core shadow. It is pretty much a band of shadow seperating the light side from the dark. However, Core shadow is fairly thin and soon, the shadow lightens back up. This is caused by reflecting light from whatever is close to that side of the ball. (we'll say the ground for instance) Now, if the ball were a multi-faceted surface, like a human body, there would be several instances of core shadows and reflected light within the shadow section of the body.
I recommend looking up the terms on google if nothing else. I'm sure you can find a good illustration to make more clear my attempt at describing the terms.
Things like this though, can make a great drawing into a piece of art.

Here's what I'm talkin' about. this isn't a great example because your reflected light should not be as bright as your direct light. but you get the idea.

Great example Fixit.
My two cents that may or may not apply here, but in general...
The closer a something is to the viewer the thicker the line. The farther away the thinner the line.

That is actually a very good point, especially with an illustrative pice of work.

Hey Fix,
I was redoing one of my old pics before you posted that nifty little demo. So half way through I tried to apply what you were showing and here is what I came up with. The abgles are all screwed up but it was a practice run anyway. Unlike BPR I have never seen either of those balls... I hated art class. So this is all new and exciting to me .
I think the only part where I really got t right... or as best as I am able atm, is on his right upper arm, left side as your looking at it. I promised Volt I would do a pic for him so I'll have another chance to practice.

Great application MW, I think your dark maybe to dark thought. Or at least too much dark over a larger field.
My still life's helped show what one percieves as all blck or true black really does consists of shades. Its a matter at how you look at a drawing.
Hmmm... let look for some stuff.

All right lets see if this works then...
The first is titled My da Vinci. This is actually a copy of the supposedly da Vinci self-potrait.
The next I did from a much bigger still life, I call it Brick & Bottle.
The latter actually has very little "black" area in it. Hopefull it comes across on the internet. The only spot being a vinyl record in the top right behind the block of wood and the top left. Both objects are black and from my angle they also reflected no light. The bottle is not truly "black."
I hope my meager exapmles demonstrate my point.
<Actually I rather like My da Vinci, and just included it. I'll blame Fixit. Also I have other pictures of my work, but I have not tweeked them to change them from pictured.>

Show off . Heheh just kidding man. That is really some awsome work. I have to admit, my passion is 'cartooning' pure and symple. My problem is I can sketch the stuff and Ink it but I cant color for crap. Still if I ever get a chance to take a class on this stuff I would jump out of my skin at the chance.

The shading is a vast improvement on the picture MW, but it still leaves a bit to be desired on teh direction of light. I assume it's coming from teh upper left corner of teh pic because of the highlight on his right thigh. But his chest is divided down the center and his left arm is just as bright as his right.
Here's a pic I started, but got bored with. (sorry, it's what I've already got on the computer) The only parts I really did more than just block in the shadow are his face and shoulder.
You can see how one side is darker entirely than the other. Also, you can see where there are a variation of lights and darks in teh shadows themselves. One thing I didn't touch on earlier was cast shadows. Cast shadows are the darkest shadow you will see in a picture, they also don't fade out, but maintain a solid tone.
One good way to remember how shadow works it this: Coming from the light source, if light is touching dark, fade from one to the other, if dark is touching light, make it a hard line. Ock's picture demonstrates this pretty well.
