Hopefully to spark some forum activity I offer my humility in folly.
If there is ever a gimped idea in a game I seem to be drawn to it.
Ever play Heroclix? SHIELD is my favorite group.
Ever play Magic: The Gathering? Green is my favorite color.
For us CoH'ers this translates into my main alt, a Claws/SR scrapper. SR so sucks, it's all or nothing.
News Flash was my first real attempt at a controller, also one of the first characters I made for Onami Strike Force, and is the only Controller set without a pet. He's Mind Control/Empathy, chosen for their synergy with what someone in the news media might possess. Maybe not the worst, but far from the best.
The Rogue Isle Protector, my Fire/ Fire brute is far from popular. It's lack of mez gimping it. Although my experince doesn't generally have a problem with this. RIP may have been my turning point into better choice. Fire does seem to do some good damage over time.
Thanks to MW I created Break Glass, Sonic/Energy blaster who actually bucks the trend, but that's becuase MW knows is stuff. Ever see him in PVP? I would love to see Spectreblade and Wrayth. got at it. Break Glass is an awesynonym.
My time in Onami led me to pick Radiant Night. When you positively, absolutely, need to "arrest" AVs. He works out well.
Occams Wall, a Stone/Stone Tanker whose build I literally stole off the forums. I finally wanted to play a tanker that felt tough. He qualifies.
Speaking of Break Glass, my first real Blaster, who still exists, was a Assualt Rifle/Devices. They have been gimped for a long time now.
I made Occam's Mind as a Illusion/Kinetics and before 18 and then 32 is a real struggle to solo.
Occam's Blade is a Katana/Regen Scrapper that shuld play better then Occ. Mind. Well, you would think, before Divine Avalanche I struggled with him too.
I think my best first choice out of the box was a Thug/Traps Mastermind. MMs are the bomb and roll quickly and easily. One of my favortie ATs they rule.
Have a learned anything after three years?
Nope, rolled a Archery/Ice Blaster. WTH was I thinking? Should have been a Archery/Energy.
I skipped the pathetic Dark/Dark Defender I made when I first started. I played him like Corrupters are played now. That was a long painful haul to level 19 before I deleted him.
So if you want to become masters of a game, invite me to play and do the exact opposite.

I'm not all together sure what you build is gimped. Sure, not the strongest sets, but not necessarily gimped.
News Flash was never a build to solo...most 'trollers arent until they get their pets. Even then, Brain Fried took a while before I had them slotted properly, along with hasten to bring them back up quickly. Of course you add some accuracy to his holds and Lightning Storm that just blasts the crap out of mobs, and now at 38 he's one tough s.o.b. Elite Bosses hardly stand a chance, especially with Rad Night along. Hell make it an AV and the two could still take it down.
When I made PhoenixHawk, I chose energy because I loved the graphics on it, and the idea of slinging blasts from my hands just makes me giddy. Unfortunately, for several Issues, the fire secondary was horrifically gimped. They took away the mez protection from burn, along with cutting it's damage drastically, and devestated the powerset. For a long time it seemed having scrapper/tanker powers for a secondary spelled nothing but debt, because blasters could NOT stand in a melee fight, and almost ALL of the secondaries were melee.
Way back when PH got into the 30's and I was playing with Celsius Bane all of the time, I grew disgusted with the character and almost deleted him. I built the NyteHawk as a replacement, taking /Energy instead of /Fire. Celsius Bane at the time could aggro an unlimited number of baddies, and with just a couple of inspirations could taunt them all into a burn patch until they were all dead. Purples, all of them.
The dev's had gimped blasters to avoid making the dreaded 'tank-mage' that could deal out massive damage and take it as well. They however overlooked that their tankers were doing just that. I have a screenshot from above a tanker who was literally covered in a mob in a burn patch and had no problem taking them down or taking the punishment.
The unbalanced play made my blasters feel useless and eventually I wrote PH's death as a result. Now, almost 6 Issues later, it's much more balanced.
So you haven't necessarily been alone in finding out what's not working and sticking with it. My gimped Eng/Fire blaster is still my only lvl 50, and tho he doesn't gain any xp anymore I still like playing him the most.

I hear you there. Spectreblade was created way back when the game first launched, back when Dark Armor's shields didn't stack and scrappers couldn't get critical hits. If not for the shields not stacking, I wouldn't have the "time mezzed" badges. But I'm much better off now. When I5 brought the global defense nerf, I actually got stronger while everyone else got weaker.

Character wise its all trial and error. I'm a altoholic and i must have at least tried at one point ever power set CoH has to offer. Before I read D's story in the comic book I was on two servers inconsitantly, both filled with alts, my highest at that point was only in the teens. Whne i got in contact with D i was grounded like I was now and went through several different character options to write about.
Pretty much i just started reading the Guild's stories looking for something that hadn't been done. I came to elec/elec, then realized there was a LiveWire so i wanted to do a elec/energy. But D, in all his wisdom, kept me from my altoholicism just this once and I stuck with elec/elec. At that time I had just got a new computer and was upgrading it and my friends were calling me "Tech" so I came up with the name "Voltech" and for the elec/ener is was going to be "Novatech"
Upon playing I realized that elec primary wasnt what I tohugh it was going to be. dmg was low and I struggled to sta a reasnable distance from my fleeing or pursuing attacker. Hover just made things worse, I was out of range fo my enemy but had to constantly wait for recharge. Soon I just said "screw it" and thus a blapper was born, I found that most my dmg was in my melee but my defence was low.
So I remade Volt (not known to most) getting the secondary powerset first. Best decision I made! I pulled, I hit twice with both melee, hit with my range up close, ran away and reapeated.
Later in my levels after many missions with the group where TG would constantly complain at how slow I was. I did a respec but made a mistake at grabbing Ball Lightening instead of Short Circuit. I fought long and hard for a respec mission and returned Volt to his old glory. After I8 came out I had fully constructed a Blapper build equipping Volt with Hasten, SS, Combat Jumping, Super Jump and at 38 Acrobatics.
It will be interestng to see what damage I can do when fully developed. Especaillay since my enhancements mostly consist of Time Reduction, Dmg increase, and End sap.

well RoboZon is the only toon i have that ive got any levels on
first one to 50... only one on 50
anyways hes a MA / SR scr... and contrary to popular belief... hes the best scr ive ever played with
after winning a few costume comps... i respec only the auto powers and i slotted them all the way with defence... which means i use no endurance but i still cant be touched
the martial arts hits the heaviest damage of all the scr powers... which means i am constantly soloing EBs... ive been going through the pratorian (spelling) earth mission and the only one i havent soloed so far was that wolf guy... cause he regenerates... i even soloed the winter version of Snaptooth at lvl 38... when my powers where just taking form
down side is that on teams the heavy damage gives me mucho argo... but if i hold off a sec before blasting everyone away... i usually do just fine
my other toons include Archer of Ramesses, Selfless One, Ninjado, Banmotsudo, The Human Experiment, Daughter of the Wood, Banished in Silence, and many many many MANY more.... but there all really low lvl

Desimus was my very first character made... then deleted... then remade. He was always a Super Strength/ Invuln Tanker but the original toon was based off of the Age of Apacolypse Juggernaut character in look. By level 16 he had no travel power and only two attacks becuase I wanted him to be able to take a hit like no one else could. Well... i succeded ther but since it took me forever to kill ANYTHING with him i soon got frustrated and deleted him. He came back a couple months later as the native African mountain of muscle he is.
Myth was the next toon and he started out as a FF/ Drk deffender. By then I was checking the forums regularly and was reading up on builds and powersets trying to max out my efficiency with each toon i made. Dark had what everyone was saying was the best deffender hold in the game (and everyone was right) so thats why i grabbed it. The bubbles were fun enough but they didnt make me feel very useful on teams so I soon deleted him as well and turned him into an Emp. At first I was going for the whole 'dedicated healer' thing but the toon sort of took a life of his own and developed himself into the 'offender' build he has today.
Wrayth. was designed to be a badass from conception. At the time Dark Melee Regens were pretty much the most lethal creatures in the game. That of course was back when Regens had more survivablity than most tanker sets and WAY before PvP. I have used every free respec since the concept was created, all three of the TF respecs, and all but three of the Vet ones experimenting with builds and none of them were inafective. Even in PvP, where Dark Melee is considered to be one of the worst primarys out there, he is a steady force.
It wasnt until almost a year later that i noticed the irony of my two favorite toons both having dark energy attacks and heal based power sets. And their stories began to develop.

This is very true and to be honest I actualy thought of that the first time I played with Thauma Guard. *Shurgs* what can I say? I have Haven up to level 14 now (grav/FF controler... dont ask, completely concept) and I am really looking forward to exploring more of the FF set as the toon develops. Dont know when I will actualy put any time into her though since I am playing Wraith and Desimus far more now and barely leveling Mith and Anarcy at all.

I played heroscape (I think that's what it was called) with my little brotyher recently. I took the cool looking viking guys with swords. The little bastard hid the techno-undead guys with chainsaws and lazer cannons until after I made my choice. Needless to say.... it was a slaughter.
So, I understand what you were talking about in the beginning of this post Ock.
