A question of length and preferance

Postby TealSwann on Tue Jun 03, 2008 11:51 am

*Ahem* I'll wait a moment for you kids to get your mind out of the gutter........

....Now then, I've noticed that one of the comments I've received on my stories is that they're a good length due to time constraints. So here's the question, when it comes to a longer story, which do you prefer...All of it in one shot, or broken into chapters and released weekly? I can see the pros and cons of both, and since I'll be posting a story(eventually) that will be three times my normal length, I figured I'd go with popular opinion.

As the 'poster general' I like to have it broken up in chapters so, if no one sends me anything for that week, at least I have something to put up!

However, your story belongs to you and whatever you want to do is completely up to you.

And now that I haven't helped you at all :D lets see what else you hear!

I think I am liking about 3000 words +/-.

I even plan to go back and re-edit stories to attempt to make them fit.

Looking forward to your stories.

A while back, I asked very similar question. My current story is really a collection of shorts that so far is looking like it will be hideously long.

Good news Trop... At 1 per week, you've got content through September :D

Most of these are right around 2500 to 4000 words, and are a one sitting deal. The one going up today is part 2 of 4 of this particular story. I was lucky in that I found some places to break it up where it wouldn't really interrupt the flow, though the last part had to be quite a bit longer than the others. Sometime in July there is another 4 parter that didn't really have any clean spots to break it.

As a reader, I would prefer to read it all at once. That includes the last three Harry Potter novels BTW, so I may be outside the norm in that regard. The girlfriend is just the opposite. she reads all the time, but not for more than an hour or two at a time. She likes to make it last.

If a story is really long on here, I'll copy it to Word then highlight the parts I've read so I know where I left off if I have to stop and come back later.

My new player guide is broken up into pages that are about 1 page long in Word. The reason being, most people will see a huge page of text and think it's too long to get through, while that same text split into smaller pages, seems more manageable.

So, after all this, I'd say split it of you have a spot to break it cleanly, but ultimately, if there is no way to do that, then put it all in at once.
Guide for new players is now (mostly) updated for Issue 12. Link is the website in my profile.

I would love to read all of them at once...

but for that to happen I what that e-paper or digital ink or whatever it is going to involve into available so stories could be downloaded into it. I can then sit back and read it like a book or anyhting else.

For reading on computer monitors, I believe it needs to be short. That's probably why flash fiction is so prevelant. It quick short and to the point. A lot is assumed.

The e-readers are still quite expensive and until that comes down Tropic is safe. Once I acquire one, I expect to be able to download stories into that.

Hear that Tropic?

You were drunk when you wrote that last post weren't you Ock

Yeah I preffer the 3000 word average. My time is horribly short of late and weeks like this where there are three posts other than my own I worry that I might not be able to read them all... can you tell I'm a little OCD? Honestly anything more than about 5000 words and there is just no way I could get to it in one week :( .

P.S.

Back off my Purple Chick MW

its my personal prefrence to have a story in chapters. That way, when things come up and I have to drag myself away from a good story, it easier to find where i left off.
